Happy new year all! Hope you all had wicked holidays, and sticking to your resolutions too ;)

To kick off 2013 on the blog theres some big news fresh from the Critical camp!

At the start of 2012 Sabre, Stray and Halogenix teamed up to drop one of the most blissful pieces of drum & bass that year, ‘Oblique’. Since then the dreamteam have continued their late night studio sessions and are now ready to announce their new collaborative project, Ivy Lab.

Their first release is already lined up:

CRIT068 – IVY LAB
A. AFTERTHOUGHT feat. Frank Carter III
AA. BRAT
Digital Exclusive Track – BRAT
(South London Ordnance Remix)

Plus a little bonus from the guys, Oblique VIP up for free download if you hop on over and like the FB page. Wicked tune, you’d be silly not to bag it.

CRIT066 – Injustice/Affliction – Foreign Concept/Sabre/Riya

More new music coming out of the woodwork today, and its not even a monday!

Something a little different from usual coming from the Critical camp this time and if the names are anything to go by, you know its gonna be a smasher; Foreign Concept, Sabre & Riya. Nice.

Now Riya is pretty much the queen of liquid dnb, with a rock solid foundation paired up alongside Lenzman or Total Science. She’s not a total stranger to the Critical sound though with smash hits like Enei’s No Fear, but I wouldn’t expect to see her name next to these other two heavyweights on Critical.

Its a good combo though! She’s tamed the snarling beats of Foreign Concept with a smooth deep roller that still maintains touches of their tech dnb roots with industrial style percussion.

Sabre’s no stranger to deep rolling beats, and a really nice match to Riya. An upbeat jazzy number with elegant off key piano licks piercing and reverberating through Riya’s dulcet tones. I could picture this one in a jazz club surrounded by smoke and red lights.

Overall; lovely listening and a really different taste from Critical Music.

Out now on Surus! Only 50 Vinyl copies of this pre-release edition available, all come with a sticker and poster!

Sabre, Stray & Halogenix – Oblique / St. Clair – CRIT061 (Critical Music)

Critical Music are awesome, pretty much the brightest bulb in the dnb scene at the moment. With a slate of fantastic releases last year and a great start to 2012 with some incredible stuff on sister label Modulations, these guys never fail to get me excited. Heres the press release:

“A dreamteam collaboration to start off Critical’s 2012 season from the hugely lauded Sabre, who returns after a long break since his astonishing debut album of 2010, Stray and Halogenix. The perfect antidote to soothe us out of those January blues, simply gorgeous. ‘Oblique’ kicks off with a delicate but tough break that cuts through the mix as gentle pads wash over the soundscape to a breakdown that oozes class and a deft touch. Smooth keys then drop, light strings and the arrival of a deep soul vocal that carries us through into amidst of aural ear-pleasing. Subtle to the end this is a serious piece of music; reach for yourheadphones and drift away. The trio get a little harder on the flipside with ‘St. Clair’, a track that toys on the tech-step tip for a slice of glitchy D&B naughtiness. A sprinkle of vocal cuts and blip FX joined by some polished bass make for a peak-time floor filler perfect to get any club bouncing. Also included is a truly sumptuous downbeat remix of ‘Oblique’ from Manchester’s Synkro, a name fast becoming synonymous with the very best in bass music. Critical coming on strong as always for the new year. Keep ‘em peeled.”

My fave has to be St. Clair, a proper nice techy roller to get your funk on. Another bag on sight release!
